Stem Cell Harvest - Round 1

By Shannon | December 7, 2004

So I went to the hospital this morning at 8am. They took blood and I came home and waited. I feel like an 80 year old man. Everything is sore and stiff.

At 11:30am the hospital called me in for my first aphresis session. I was pretty worried because I have never done anything like this before. So I get there and they hook me up and start the machine. I look at them and was like .. That’s it? This is how it will feel for the next 3 hours? They’re like yeah … pretty boring, eh?

So I breezed through the collection process. I slept mostly .. so the attendant had cranked up the machine because I was not complaining about numbness or any other problems. This allowed them to get a greater volume than normal. I got of the hospital about 4:30pm.

The hospital called around 6-6:30 and said I did great for my first session.

3.5 million stem cells!

I will have to go in Wed morning and finish up, but I should have more than enough stem cells for the transplant.

After tomorrow I will get a 2-3 week break before the Stem Cell Transplant. It will be nice to actually get in to work and just be normal for a couple weeks.

I hope everyone has some happy holidays! :)
